Overview

A historical marker points out the birth site of African American activist Malcolm X. His family left Omaha in the 1920s. Decades later, community leaders launched a crusade for this memorial, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places. His home no longer exists; however, a marker stands on land at his former address. Although there really is not much to see, history buffs will find this memorial site in North Omaha a nice side trip. Admission is free.

Needs improvementby Yahoo | 2006-08-28 22:17:26 |

Five years ago when I visited there was a land marker but it was vandalized and the area was full of trash. It seems like even the people who live around the site don't respect it. I visited the site a few months ago. There was only a marker on a street sign and no distinct land marks showing exactly where it was. I hope that this location gets an extreme make over and that the people in the community do what it takes to preserve this historic place!

Nondescript, but incredibly relevantby Yahoo | 2006-07-11 04:29:03 |

Omaha is the birthplace of both Gerald Ford and Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little), however the city only proudly boasts of the former with a presidential garden and library. Fortunately, some local residents have begun making X's birthsite discoverable... the site has no museum or visitor's center, nor any informational sign... simply a marker within a fenced-in field. If you are in Omaha, you can easily swing over to see this historical location. Considering that there is no admission (as there is no official landmark), one should be hard-pressed to complain about the lack of fanfare. And if you, like many others, feel that X was an important figure in American (and possibly African) history, consider donating to the Malcolm X Memorial Assocation , which is trying to develop a culutral and historical center on the site.

what a disappointmentby Yahoo | 2006-02-04 01:34:39 |

followed the signs to an overgrown weed and sapling filled junk pile on an empty lot in a questionable neighborhood. very disappointing and not worth the risk!

Awesome...humbling!by Yahoo | 2006-01-11 10:41:16 |

A must-see in Omaha! Just to be in the same space that the great man himself once lived is truly an emotional experience. I only wish that more native Omahans would take the opportunity to visit.
