Overview

This museum is housed in an Orlando mansion, once a private residence, converted in 1998 to show off the work of a single artist, Earl Cunningham (1893-1977). His work is considered "primitive genius." Cunningham, who was a St. Augustine native, attempted to capture the haunting landscapes of the Sunshine State. The Everglades proved a favorite subject. The museum's permanent 50-piece Cunningham collection was a bequest to the City of Orlando by collectors Marilyn and Michael Mennello. In addition to showing Cunningham's work, the museum plans a series of rotating exhibits. Call ahead for admission price and other details.

The museum and collection are outstanding. It is easy to find, and getting in, parking and getting out are effortless. The facility is spotless and well decorated, in a beautiful lakeside setting. The staff is elegant. The cost is low. Most importantly, the Cunningham paintings, and the collection of horse sculptures and paintings are overwhelmingly beautiful.

The Mennello Park museum is set in the beautiful Lock Haven Park complex of museums. Spending time within the park itself is a welcome treat from the theme parks to the south. Cypress trees covered in moss shade crab grass and geckos as you walk between museums. Mennello itself is a small but very professional museum with an impressive collection of folk art. There are several rooms that house collections from City Hall, Earl Cunningham and other folk and outsider artists. I enjoyed my time there immensely and recommend it to anyone wanting to get a sense of true Florida culture through the lense of regional artists as well at a look at more nationally recognized folk artists.

    At last, a peaceful, quiet time in Orlando!by Yahoo | 2005-09-24 22:01:57 |

How nice it is to find an out of the way atraction to spend a quiet afternoon, without lines and cranky parents and children. This is a place for locals, and those wanting a break from the fast paced theme parks.
