Overview

Bunraku puppetry began in Osaka in the 17th century as a popular rather than aristocratic form of entertainment. This fascinating art is a combination and fusion of samisen (three-string banjo) music, puppetry and chanting. The lavishly-costumed puppets are large and manipulated by hand rather than by strings. The plots are usually epics driven by the music and are similar in style to kabuki. There are performances in January, April, June, August and November. An English program is available.

Great Japanese cultural experienceby Yahoo | 2007-04-26 12:02:42 |

Bunraku is so interesting and very Japanese. The English headphones provide interesting translation of the action in real time. I was able to understand everything. Bring your lunch into the theater and plan to eat at the intermission. There is little time to go out and get some food.

Great Timeby Yahoo | 2006-12-10 18:03:43 |

I atttended the National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka with my daughter. Although we could not understand the language, the story was made clear by the actor's voices and the puppets movement. Upon entering the theatre, we were greeted by one of the employees who escorted us through the lobby while explaining that nights performance. I've never felt more welcome in another country.
