Overview

Sumiyoshi Taisha is one of the most famous shrines in Japan—so much so that shrines with similar names can be found all over the country. This shrine has a very long history and is widely venerated as the home of the guardian deity of sailors. Passing under the enormous archway gate, you come to the taiko bashi, or "drum bridge," for which the shrine is especially renowned. The bridge gets packed with masses of people on New Year's Day and other celebrations. Events are staged at the shrine all year round; New Year's and summer festivals are the most important ones.

This site can be seen from the small train station platform. It is extremely restful, peaceful, and located in a quite part of Osaka. The area has numerous trees, a river or moat, running water, and several shrines and other places which promote tranquility, contemplation, and relax the soul in the midst of a huge busy city. While we were there, a Shinto wedding was ongoing which was quite beautiful. You couples see going together, married couples, women hoping to get pregnant (we were told), pregnant women, and couples with newborns all seeking blessings. The grounds are covered with small pebbles that make a 'crunch' sound as you walk - lending to the relaxing ambience. We would go again in a heartbeat. Same for the Osaka Castle PARK, which is huge (but has no shrines). In the Castle Park you can walk for hours thinking you are in a beautiful fragrant forest.
