Overview
A thrilling cable car ride shuttles visitors from the desert floor to the heights of Mt. San Jacinto, sometimes providing a 40-degree temperature drop in just a few minutes. Once at the top, there are hiking trails, mule rides, a cocktail bar and a restaurant. While many visitors just hop up for the view, it can be a starting point for many outdoor activities. The last car goes up at 8 p.m., while the last car down is at 9:45 p.m. Admission: Adults $21.95, children (3-12) $14.95, seniors (60+) $19.95. "Ride 'n' Dine" is $34 for adults and seniors and $22 for children.Open Hours
Mo to Fr from 10:00 AM to 09:45 PM, Sa to Su from 08:00 AM to 09:45 PMOMG! What didn't I like! This is a once in a lifetime experience, that I would recommend to anyone. Beautiful scenery, and what a cool way to go up a mountain. If you're ever in the area you've just GOT TO GO!!!
We went to the tram in July, to see the views that everyone raves about. What we saw was the smog haze over the valley. It's much cooler up here however, so that was relaxing. We read the reviews before, and it seemed the cafeteria style restaurant was not so great, so we didn't go for the ride-and-dine option. We choose to eat at the "fancier" restaurant instead. It was a big costly mistake. It was 10 minutes to dinner menu, but they wouldn't give us the option of choosing from it even though there were more items on it for us to eat. We don't eat beef, pork or poultry, and we wanted to try the salmon dish. It took the waiter a long time to come out to us on the deck to give us water and the menu too. We ordered the trio antipasti, calafia chrimp calamari, and margherite penne with shrimp. Sounds pretty good, but: The red pepper hummus on the trio antipasti was dried a weird orange with a rather thick crust (meaning it's been sitting on the dish for a long time), the baguette tasted stale, the olives were black olives from a can, the best thing was the fresh tomato salsa. The penne had very thick old woody asparagus even though the grocers in palm springs were selling young asparagus. I had never seen such huge asparagus before. The grocers wouldn't even sell it. It was watery and tasteless except for the canned artichokes and the shrimp was boiled shrimp. The basil, vine-ripened dried tomato and garlic promised were non-existent in the dish. It looked like penne with some watery white liquid with yellow-green huge asparagus chunks with boiled shrimp on top. The Shrimp Calamari was cooked in OLD oil. Some of it came out looking like it had been cooked twice, like leftovers stuck to the fryer, or reheated leftovers. It was very brown, and extremely greasy without flavour. We never saw the waiter after serving our meal, even though our drinks needed refreshing. The cost of the meal was roughly $50. To make it worse, the Pines cafe ride-and-dine meal looked nicer, with corn on the cob and fresh green brocolli. The trails were badly marked, and it was hard to figure out where to go and which trail you were on. It was a nice stroll through the meadow section however. They didn't advertise well for some features of the building, such as the movie theatre, which we discovered as we explored the entire building. there is also wilderness hiking and an overnight camping area. It was playing a movie at the time. We spent a few hours up in the shade reading, and the cool breeze was very nice. However, the food left us with extremely bloated stomachs and uncomfortable, so going hiking went out of the day plan. It turned out to be food poisoning. All in all, it was about $100 for 2 people to get up there. If we hadn't gotten the bad food, we might have enjoyed our stay up there much more. So to travellers, if you Must go on the Tram, pack a picnic lunch and water, and don't eat at the restaurant.
Just a great time. The bar was nice prices were fair my children had a great time in the snow.Maybe fee change for more then one visit price could lower as your visits increase.
We had a summer pass this past year. It was a good value for us. After the third time you go up to Mountain Station the pass paid for it's self. Being from the desert, it was a mini vacation for us to ride up the mountain and get out of the heat. The views are spectacular during the day, and at night as well. We plan on getting another summer pass this year.
The rotating tram cars are a definite improvement over the old stationary cars. The view is extraordinary, extending to the Salton Sea on clear days. The tram operator was young and not very knowlegable about the area. On top the fresh, cool mountain air is a great wakeup from the overheated valley below. Avoid the restaurants like the plague. Experienced riders carry snacks and drinks in their backpacks. The lodge building could be a Southern California must see but, like Palm Springs below, it is in a sorry state of disrepair. I LOVED goinig on the Arial Tramway! The view is overwhelmimg and the air is so clean it made my nose run (a good thing). If you love nature and a good view, this place is for you.
The restaurant, lounge and lookout needs young blood, that of the new Palm Springs to bring this place up to date. I mean the lookout and restaurant are so dirty and gritty, needs new paint, carpeting, new bathrooms, the works. The food in the restaurant, and I mean the better restaurant, is the worst, although the drinks are generous. It's just sooooo beat... Somebody come to the rescue. This place needs to be great again.
If you or anyone visit Palm Springs, you have to ride the Aerial Tramway. It's so beautiful and peaceful. You will actually think you are in another city because of the great temperature decrease. It's wonderful up there and I will be going back soon.
i loved this place because the views are amazing during the way up and the hike. the trees had an amazing smell of butterscotch! it was all nature and animals. it was smething i will never forget! this hike is fun for all ages. it was soooooooooo worth the time and money.you would get everything out of your money. i recommend this to everyone!if i could, i would go everyday, but i try to go as many times as i can. this place helps you appreciate nature more and it will change your life!
What I liked: It's a wonderful ride to the top, and the tram itself is a rare treat (if I recall correctly, there are only three of these rotating-floor trams in the world, and this is one of the steepest in the world). And the whoop-de-doos over the cable towers border on a thrill ride. And then once you get to the top, the views are impressive, and hiking around Mt. San Jacinto is fantastic. Ride down after dark to get a great view of the city lights of Palm Springs. The forest rangers were friendly and helpful. What I disliked: Forget about buying the "Ride and Dine" ticket. It saves you nothing, and commits you to eating in the cafeteria, like it or not. If you decide you'd rather eat in the fancy restaurant, then you can use your ticket to get $10 off, even though you spent $16 extra for the ticket. The food in the cafeteria was pretty good, but overpriced at $16. Bring your own food and drink to save a lot of money, but you can't eat it indoors (there are signs that say "no picnicking") and there are only a few tables available outdoors. Some of the people working in the cafeteria seemed like kids who'd rather be home watching MTV.
