Parma, a Roman colony from 183 BCE, has always had political importance thanks to its central geographic position between the Padana valley, Liguria and Tuscany which has made it the site of intense economic, social and cultural exchanges. The University of Parma has many undergraduate courses at the faculties of engineering, medicine, economics, law, pharmacy and science as well as specialist schools.
