Overview

Kampung Ayer consists of a collection of water villages found along Weld Quay, that has been in existence since the nineteenth century. Stilted wooden shacks, linked by planked walkways, are home to generations of stevedores and boatmen eking out a hardscrabble existence in the margins of the port. Also called clan jetties, in the clannish tradition of the island's Chinese, one of the largest and liveliest is the Chew Jetty at the end of Gat Lebuh Armenian. The Malayan Railway Building clock tower, aged shipping offices and godowns, are another rare perspective.
