Looming tall, it is a landmark to this Thai Buddhist temple and with the longest reclining Buddha statue in the world. The 180-foot gold-plated statue is housed in the main shrine, a simple elongated rectangular building with a high-pitched roof. On display are the colorful, distinct Thai architectural motifs with sculptured creature-like ornaments and floral carvings painted in gold and rainbow colours. Images of the Buddha fill the interior. The temple celebrates the Thai New Year, Wesak Day, Merit Making Day and the anniversary consecration of the statue.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 06:00 AM to 05:30 PMRecently, I visited Wat Chaiyamangalaram Thai temple at Burmah Street, Penang (Malaysia). Wat Chaiya is the best Thai temple in Malaysia by far. This Chaiya temple really amazes me. The God idols in the exterior of the temples are decorated with shiny and blink blink ornaments - a vibrant display colours and artistic design. The carvings and motifs are work of artisan that put enormous effort to create real-like God statues. The internal of Chaiya temple is a serene and peaceful place. The floor tiles are imprinted with repeated motifs of lily plants - a very oriental feeling. I saw a HUGE reclining Buddha at the middle of the temple. Later, I discovered the statue was only built in 1958, in conjunction with the 2500th anniversary of the birth of Buddha, at a cost of RM100,000. I captured tons of photo during my trip to the temple. Feel free to check out my photo blog and travelogue: http://myloismylife.blogspot.com/ cheers! mylo
It is a beautiful temple with a magnificient reclining Buddha statue. Surroundings were very calm and quite brining a soothing effect to the mind. A clean and an attarctive site. It is worthwhile to spend time observing the beauty and a place that must be visited when in Penang.
I found this temple to be as Beautiful as the temples I have visited in Thailand. It was a real treat to visit. Make sure you look at the wonderful tiles on the floor and ceilings.
