This large lake could be an exquisite place to escape the dust and heat of the city if it were not for the fact that it is rather polluted. As it is, Boeng Kak with its cafes and guesthouses has become a rallying point for backpackers in search of a USD2 room, cheap beer and a hammock to drink it in. Street 90 to the south of the New Mosque has a number of pleasant bars with bamboo pavilions over the water from which you can watch the sun set over Wat Neak Kavaan on the other side of the lake.
Open Hours
- Monday to Sunday from 12:00 AM to 12:00 AM
Relax by the lake
Boeng Kak is clearly the most relaxed part of Phnom Penh. It offers unbeatable sunset views, a chilled atmosphere and a bolthole from the madness of downtown PP. If you're looking for nightclubs, girlie bars and late nights then this is probably not for you but if you wish to save a few dollars, reflect on the horror of Toul Sleng in peace and prepare for the rest of the beauty of Cambodia, then you could do a lot worse. Most of the hotels offer rooms starting from around US$4 but $8 gets you a great room with hot water and private bathroom. There are several restaurants of terrific value, including an Indian buffet and for local information and a great Bloody Mary then check out the Magic Sponge bar.
