Overview
Resembling a community garden you would find in Suzhou, Portland's sister city, is a beautiful green space near the bank of the Willamette River called Classical Chinese Garden. The Lovejoy Bridge, joining the Northeast part of town with the Northwest, is gone, but the replacement (complete with pathways, plant displays, a teahouse and store) is a welcome addition. A scenic place, this place is a must-visit for it's uniqueness. This was really a fun place to spend an afternoon. It was during an intense heat wave, and I wouldn't really recommend going when it's that hot since the tea room is not air conditioned and was stifling. The tea was delicious though, and there are many to choose from. The grounds were beautiful and I loved that it was a block right in the middle of the city but still serene and peaceful.
The Gardens were truly beautiful. It was a lovely surprise since I was familiar with Japaneses gardens but not Chinese gardens. I took many pictures and as a result am taking my daughter and granddaughter to see it during my next visit to Portland. I especislly enjoyed the architecture and furniture in the garden rooms and the spectacular water lillies.
I went with a large group and found that the garden was a good place to go and relax. Our tour guide was great and answered all of our questions. I would invite any body to stop by the garden.
Even though the garden is beautifully crafted it is small and you never quite get to feel like you are in China instead of the U.S. You can still see Portland's skyscrapers all around you. Yes it is absolutely beautiful, however it is really small. There are other places in Portland to go that are just as beautiful, much bigger and a greater value for your money. For just a dollar more check out the Japanes Gardens in Washington Park. It is huge and you will forget that you are in America. You really feel as though you are in Japan. For 4 dollars less check out the Grotto. The Grotto is amazing and a must see when in Portland.
Visiting the Classical Chinese Garden in Portland is an exquisite experience for all the senses. It's so much more than just plantings. All the carefully crafted organic and inorganic delights reward one who pays attention to the most prosaic and the most elaborate detail from the pattern of raindrops on the lake to the carved ginko panels. Next time I visit I will make sure I have time to take a scheduled tour so I can appreciate the poetry and learn more about the integration of design and materials. I suspect this is a place to be visited and revisited with pleasure.
Beautiful!!!Beautiful!!!That's all that I have to say about this calm and relaxing place!!!The Classical Chinese Garden is the best place to be for yur anniversary or a stroll down the lightly lit path...It is so soothing to just be near this deliteful area! The aroma of the natural beauty is so relaxing that if you ever want to bring your children there they must be awake and pumped because this place is sooooooo sothing that no matter their mood they will fall fast asleep or atleast be VERY calm!!!!Enjoy the scenery at the Classical Chinese Garden!!
I explored this beautiful garden during a field trip for a Japanese language class. The striking beauty and carefully designed order induces a calming sense of serenity. From the relaxing tea houses to the bridges that transport you from one world to the next, you will surely find your path to inner peace at the Classical Chinese Garden here in Portland.
A beautiful recreation of a classical Chinese garden. The handiwork is incredible. Very scenic, and everything they say about "oasis in the middle of the city." But it's hard to totally forget all the buildings of downtown/Chinatown looming just beyond the walls of the garden. Still, I'd love to go back sometime on a clear night, if given the chance.
This place is a sanctaury. It is so lovely and relaxing, with lush greenery, coy ponds, prayer huts, paths, and stones. You'll want to block out a whole afternoon for this one, bring a loved one and just walk around and chill. Please leave the little kids at home. It would be very boring for them and their behavoir may detract from the other people's relaxing. Adult price was about 7$ last time i went.
A sanctuary within the city where one can find solace and inspiration away from the urban tumult, the gardens are an emmisary from a place distant in space and time. Yet, in their entrancing beauty, the gardens manage convey a sense of modern relevance and even necessity as they bestow a rare perspective on the world to all who are fortunate or wise enough to visit and witness them.
