Overview

Portland is called the "Rose City" for a reason. These public gardens, established in 1917 and set above the cityscape of downtown Portland, are the oldest official public rose gardens in the United States, and the only place in North America that can issue officially-recognized awards for hybrid roses grown around the world. The best time of the year for viewing is during the June Rose Festival; fragrant blooms begin to appear in May and continue until frost. This attraction is free and open to the public.

Beautifully organized garden of roses that is a must see for anyone visiting Portland. There aren't many natural life experiences that are able to drive the senses by: Seeing the diverse palette of rose colors while smelling the unique aroma.

Don't miss it!by Yahoo | 2007-09-12 05:17:21 |

This rose garden is one of the best we've ever seen! Beautifully landscaped in terraces overlooking the city, it should not be missed in your trip to Portland. Every plot is labeled, and there is a wonderful gift shop, too. Spectacular!

Not so Freeby Yahoo | 2007-06-10 14:39:59 |

The roses were absolutely awesome, beautiful, fragrant; I was completely wowed by each and every one!! I would prefer to pay an entrance fee and be left alone to enjoy the garden, rather than have someone following me around making sure I stuffed all the donation boxes throughout.

Do not forget to walk up the hillby Yahoo | 2007-06-06 13:37:44 |

to the Japanese gardens. The largest in the US. Just wonderful. A place I visit every time I am in Portland. It is not free but worth every penny. I had never visited one prior to my first trip there. I fell in love right away. Kids will like the koi pond.

Beautifully Free!by Yahoo | 2007-05-24 21:28:02 |

This is a amourous, majical, peaceful place. The best part is it's free! The roses not only look beautiful, but they smell beautiful. It makes for a nice romantic spot with the one you love (my husband proposed to me there), or a little walk to spend time with Grandma. My kids love it, too. Sometimes a musician will come and acompany the sight and smell of the roses with sound. After you are done you can take the kids around the corner to a super cool playground!
