We visited the summer of '06. The Prague citizens are very friendly and inviting, we brushed up on some Czech before we got there but a great number of nationals spoke English very helpful. The sites and the tour guide very informative and enthusiastic. Great Old World feel since much of the cities architecture is well maintained. We plan on going again this summer '09.
If you are in Prague then it is weel worth a trip up the hill to the castke as it has some good museums, some great views and some fantastic architecture. The cathedral was enough to leave me breathless (nothing to do with the hill) the story of Prague castle exhibition was good value for money and the views across the town from the entrance were very good. Unfortunately we went in winter so the Gardens were closed.
Prague Castle was very Beautiful, loved the different architectural styles. Disregard what some of the American's say in these reviews, it's not their fault, they have no history so cannot appreciate others. Spent a fantastic 4 days in the city, wasn't as cheap as I'd expected but who care's when you have such a well preserved historical city to explore. Fantastic, a word of advice go on a guided tour, if we hadn't then we would not have appreciated what we were seeing as much as we did.
This Castle was truley beautiful and carries a huge amount of history. You'll enjoy it. Any one who enjoys history and wants to find out things about Prague should visit
Prague Castle is magnificent. Not a "castle" as LaLa land Californians would expect. No Cinderella castle but a real conglomeration of amazing architecture covering 500 or more years - Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque. Gorgeous. Be sure to go to the top of St. Vitus Cathedral - the extremely large church behind the Presidential palace. The catacombs are interesting, too. Outside, just past the side Golden entrance to St Vitus and the flying buttresses is a much smaller Romanequse chapel that I missed on my first visit. The 1000 year old frescoes are some of the best I've ever seen. This is the Europe that wasn't destroyed by WWII.
Prague is not too expensive, there are great places to eat and shop and plenty of things to do and see. We especially enjoyed the castle. The history was interesting--but the view from the top was what we enjoyed the most--we could see for miles! Do be careful, though. . . one member of our group was greatly startled to find out upon close inspection that those guards in the blue uniforms are NOT fake! Even through her surprise the guy never cracked a smile--all in all a great day.
To get the best pictures of your life, go the castle! You are high above the city and the river, and you will have amazing opportunities to capture Prague at it's best. Hit all part sof the castle. TIP- if you wantto se ethe changing of the guard ceremony- get there early, as crowds line the gates, and it gets HARD to see. It is goo dto have a great Guidebook with you as you explore the castle. It will give you info to get the most out of your visit. I recommend "Eyewitness Guide to Prague."
We didn't get it, the so called castle just seemed like a bunch of building connected together. The views for the top of the hill are great, but save your money. Go to Bratislava or Budapest to see a real castle. What a tourist trap....
I saw Prague in the winter and it was like out of a Christmas story. The view from the castle was beautiful and the tour was very much worth it. Check it out along with the rest of Prague, including the old town sites. I used to think the best beer I would ever have would be in Munich until I came here! Praha is worth a visit for many reasons--architecture, history, culture. Great underground system as well for getting around.
The castle is still in use as the seat of government. There are seedy characters all over and pockets are picked often! Nothing special. It tends to get very crowded in the summer with lots of young back-packers!
