Overview

Rising up from the center of the castle grounds, the Gothic cathedral dominates the Prague skyline and is one of the defining images of the city and its tourist center. The cathedral hides a number of valuable monuments including the Royal Crypt wherein lies the remains of Czech Royalty, the St Wenceslas Chapel, and the Coronation Chamber where the Crown Jewels are exhibited. The cathedral's foundation stone was laid in 1344 on the initiative of Charles IV (1316-1378) on the site of an earlier 10th century rotunda dedicated to St Vitus. It was not until 1929 that the cathedral was actually completed. Entrance to the cathedral is free although there are discreetly placed collection boxes. A charge is made for entrance to the crypt and other attractions.

Awe Struck!by Yahoo | 2007-05-01 18:35:52 |

My brother in law took me here while I was living in Prague. I was speechless when I saw the incredible stained glass windows throughout the cathedral. As a Christian the I recognized each window as a Bible story. The thought that this incredible workmanship was done so long ago with such basic tools is almost beyond comprehension. Anyone that visits Prague and does not visit St. Vitus is missing one of the most beautiful places in the city!

Guidebook will thrill youby Yahoo | 2006-12-08 19:43:20 |

If you have a guidebook (I used the Eyewitness Guide to Prague)- the info you can get on every facet of this castle is great. It has so MANY chapels inside, and you will enjoy the detail of each one, if you have a little explanation. And you go down into the catacombs of the cathedral too. Very neat. Alfonse Much created a huge stained glass window in one chapel (he was one of the Czech Republic's greatest artiosts), and it's worth the trip. Just outside the cathedral is ONE (of like 2) free restrooms in Prague. The ticket was kinda pricey, and photos are hard to take in there, but its a nice place to spend an hour.
