Overview
This massive granite building was built as a national shrine to commemorate the heroes of the epic Great Trek of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The four walls of the Hall of Heroes, which is the main body of the building, are decorated with an Italian frieze depicting the history of the Great Trek in 1838, when Afrikaaners left Cape Town for the hinterland. One of the most interesting features of the monument is the 260-step stairway which leads to the dome, and the spectacular view it offers of the city.
The way the management of this institution has adapted to change without sacrificing the facts of history nor their principles and core values. Gives a vivid insight into the history and spirit of the Afrikaner people of South Africa.
South Africa is the mast wonderful place in the world!!!! the Voortrekker Monument too!,i had great times in there, with friends, familly and every one you know, go and have a look sometime!!!!!!!!!
I took my son for a tour of the Monument to give him an insight into the History of the Afrikaans side of his family. Overall a very informative an educational visit - the laager, paintings, tapestry and museum statues clearly depicted the trials, tribulations and resourcefulness of the Voortrekkers in their quest for freedom and independence. It was no different to the advance of the settlers from East to West in the USA. In fact I thought there was a great similarity in this monument with that on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA in homage to the Mormons. We later visited the Blood River Monument and the Vroue Monument in Bloemfontein. All of these sites commemorate milestone events in the building of a new nation. The Afrikaaner community are to be commended for preserving this history for furure generations of South Africans and visitors to the country. The restaurant served the best boerwors rolls I have ever tasted.
On Easter Monday we visited this monument. Loads of tourists and guess what? The restaurant was closed! The steps were filthy and the overall impression was of indifferent management.
An imposing monument standing at the Southern entrance of Pretoria. The atmosphere is chilly at times, but the monument itself is an amazing architechtural work and gives you a splendid view of the surrounds. For an insight into the roots of the Afrikaner nation, visit this monument. Not something I would generally recommend, but if you have the time, do take a look.
Well built & very interesting. Showed the problems and how the pioneers overcame.
Each scene inside tells a story of not long ago. The ride to top allows for an overview of the city of today.
Enjoyed the visit and found the monument very informative. It brings alive a bygone era and shows you how the voortrekkers managed to get so far over the inhospitable terrain.
