With four back surgeries behind me, I wish they'd warn you at Chollar that you have to duck down at entry for many feet until you can stand upright again. Yes, my and partner's back were sore after. Honest. Shasta Caverns at Lake Shasta is even deeper, steeper.
I really liked the guide on this tour. He was a (retired?) mining engineer and could answer questions in detail. In fact, he also has a good historical sense of the way the mines worked and the chronology of the whole place. I asked him where "Gold Canyon" was. Many people told me that it was just "Six Mile Canyon". But the tour guide knew his facts. He told me that it was really along the road that connects Silver City to Dayton. He knew that Gold Canyon was different than Six Mile Canyon and knew how to get to it. I am going to go back and do some exploring to see if I can find that road along the original Gold Canyon -- I think it is called the Dayton Toll Road and is down by the fork between 341 and 342. I'd like to ask the tour guide if he would provide a private tour of the whole area for the purposes of writing a history. I think this is the right guy to help out a serious history student of the Comstock. The guide is really great.
I have been there twice and am planning my 3rd trip with my husband and kids. It is a fun, short, tour. It is not a hard walk but it is only about 1/2 hour. The tour guides were able to answer all of our questions and were very good.
you know I took the tour in summer of 2006 and the guides knew a lot about the history of the mine...however its a long way underground and a great place to find out that the tour your on has te storey county fire dept. going along for the tour...I enjoyed but was the first one out...sunlight never looked so good...
I did this mine tour in the Summer of 2005. The tour was very good and very educational. The people who run the tour and very informed about the mine and history of the area.
great tour by knowledgable guide. get a real feel for what a miner had to deal with.
