Built in 1762 as an arsenal, the Museu Histórico Nacional was also a military prison until 1922, when it was converted into an exhibition centre for the celebration of 100th anniversary of the independence from Portugal. Here you will find objects and models that retrace the history of Brazil since the discovery, with special attention to the slavery period and the sugar cane industry.Open Hours

This museum has a good structure for visitors like few in Brazil!! Reserve 3-4 hours at least!! There are informations in English. The only bad point is the localization in Downtown: its not good to go walking to others atractions in that area, but its easy to go by bus from the South Zone, some buses stop in front of it.
