Overview

In the 4 BC, Circus Maximus was one of the largest stadia in Rome, with a capacity of 250,000 seated spectators. It was the venue for horse racing, athletics tournaments and animal fighting. The last races held here were in AD 549. Another very popular sport was marine battling, the arena was filled with water and fights between light boats took place. The tower is from medieval times.

nothing to seeby Yahoo | 2006-10-03 10:00:32 |

I was very interested to see the great Circus Maximus and I was very dissapointed to see nothing at all... It's just a great patch of grass, now used as a park. So if you're not there just out of historical interest, or if you have a great imagination (enough to visualize the whole thing that is now missing), then don't waste your time... But if you go to Bocca della Verita, and are also curious about Circus Maximus, it's just a few steps away.

Don't waste your time on this dumpy fieldby Yahoo | 2006-09-20 01:22:23 |

Checking out this dumpy patch of dry grass was a huge waste of time and energy. There nothing interesting about it. Save your energy and don't come near it. I've never seen so much broken glass from bottles spread over such a big field.

I didn't know what to expect when I stumbled upon this area. I could almost imagine chariots racing around the circuit. Of course there is so little remaining of the 'original' circus, but that didn't matter to me. Now it is like a large park, an open green space where people can walk and jog and relax.

The Oldest Stadium on the Planetby Yahoo | 2005-05-12 12:55:55 |

It was well worth it so see this milleniums old stadium situated in the shadows of the ruins of the Roman Imperial Palace. Quite a neat site to see!
