Overview

No visit to Rome is complete without seeing its magnificent Colosseum, a vast amphitheater with seating for 55,000 that was designed as a horse racing circuit and arena for animal fighting and gladiatorial battles. After its completion, spectacular 100-day celebrations were organized as part of the opening ceremony in 72 BC. Its name is believed to come from Nero's enormous statue of Colossus that stood close by.

Ticket Nightmareby Yahoo | 2009-01-16 09:46:10 |

I purchased tickets from www.museumticket.it the day before we wanted to go to the Colosseum. After doing so, I received a confirmation email saying that I would receive my tickets 'within 24 hours in a second e-mail'. Upon this advice, we booked a taxi for the following day. The next day, the tickets still hadn't arrived, and with our taxi waiting we had to leave. The Colosseum staff knew nothing of our tickets so we had to pay again. After arriving home, I contacted www.museumticket.it via email to see if they would reimburse our tickets, considering that they hadn't arrived within the 24 hour timeframe stated in their confirmation email. I received an email back, stating that their system was operating correctly and that no reimbursement would be processed. I emailed back to ask again about the 24 hour delivery timeframe and received no reply. When I emailed again, stating that I would be forced to write about my experience with their company on a public forum, I received an email back that threatened 'calumny proceeding through a legal action against your person and against the sites that will publish negative information about us'. Calumny means defamation. I had to look it up. I am not scared of them, hence the reason for this review. I have made sure to publish only factual information, rendering their legal threat null and void. I, personally, would never do business with this company ever again. There are numerous other online companies that sell tickets for museums in Italy and I would use one of them next time. You can make your own mind up. Me trying to convince you otherwise would amount to calumny.

You need a guideby Yahoo | 2008-10-20 00:15:57 |

We had a guide telling us of the history other wise it would have been like many other ruins in the world.

Such an experienceby Yahoo | 2008-07-01 18:52:17 |

The colliseum was great. The gladiators took pictures with us for free b.c we used our camera. They actually posed for 4 pictures with us. The horse and carriage people will try to rip you off, but you can avoid them. The sights were great. It was fun to walk around on our own without keeping up with a group and watching the clock.I would love to go back.

It was great, we hope to return soon.by Yahoo | 2008-06-09 23:34:32 |

I went to Rome with my friends and lasted two weeks. We had lots of fun because we never stoped visiting the sites, we were always on the go. The most beautiful place to us was the Vatican. There were other interesting places that we enjoyed like the Castle San Angelo and lots of other amazing places that we visited.

Tourists Bewareby Yahoo | 2008-05-26 14:30:01 |

You dont want to miss this when in Rome but...the experience we had there diminished the greatness of it. When we walked up, the "gladiators" out front offered to take pics with them and our family. Then they demanded 10 Euros for it! There will be tour guides who ask you to join their tour to avoid a wait in the regular line, then come to find out you will have wait with them also. Our tour guide was a grumpy old man who refused to speak louder. This was a disappointing experience!

Ingenuity of Ancient Romansby Yahoo | 2008-05-08 18:09:02 |

To the writer who exclaims, "...who wants to see an old, decomposing colosseum?" Why don't you stay in the comfort of your pre-fab, circa 1998 home so you can totally ignore a little thing called history and culture. Just don't forget to thank the Romans for your indoor plumbing, innovations with urban planning and Roman numerals (so you can tell the difference between the Rocky movies and each of the Super Bowls). A word of advice: don't go to Athens...you may have a coronary. Che caffone.

Defo go backby Yahoo | 2008-04-22 13:44:21 |

We went on the sunday morning 20/4/08 and the queues were huge, although much to our delight they went down very fast and in all I think we queued for max 30 minutes. It is well worth a visit for the €11 it is we spent at least a couple of hours there and it was coupled with the manifestation parade which only heightened the enjoyment more. Heres a bit of trivia for you did you know they used to fill the bottom or the collossuem in water and reinact battle scenes!!!! Just walking round thinking about the gladiators and christians and of course the lions. Its definetly not to be missed on your trip to Rome.

Heart of Ancient Romeby Yahoo | 2008-04-05 00:15:00 |

Truely a collossal structure, impressive not only for the history of the games that were held there, but for the engineering and design of the space. Amazing views of ancient Rome, hard to miss and impossible to forget. A definate must see while in Rome, any time of the year. Great to plan a day at the Foro Romano and Colosseo
