Overview
The Forum Romanum was designed to be the center of social, political and economic life in the city. The innumerable remains include the well-conserved triumphal arch of Emperor Septimius Severus, with reliefs depicting his victories and the base of the Temple of Saturn with its eight columns and their splendid Ionic capitals. The Rostrum is the famous platform from which Mark Antony gave his oration in Shakespeare's play after Julius Caesar's assassination. The platform became the setting for many important events in Rome's history. It was named the rostrum after the bows of the ships that form the decorative motif. The Temple of Vesta was the home of the Vestal Virgins, charged with keeping the sacred flame alight. The circular foundations still remain, near to a garden in which traces of the House of the Vestal Virgins can still be seen. The Basilica of Constantine and Massentius was used as the court, and the three remaining barrel-vaulted naves give an idea of its gigantic structure. The Arch of Titus celebrates victories in Judea, and in the reliefs you can see the spoils of war, including an altar and a seven-armed chandelier. Roman Forum is one of the best things to see in Rome, especially if you know the history and appreciate it! Just knowing that a great civilization lived where you are standing and looking at the remains of one of the greatest emperors in the world is...
I have to say that at first the Foro Romano was more of a disappointement to me. You've heard about it so much and in the end what do you see? A bunch of stones in no particular order. But my mistake was that I went there on my own, without a guide or a book that could explain to me the structure of the place. Next time I went there with a book about it and a picture of how the Foro used to look like and, yes, it had a due impact on me=) Just switch on you imagination and think what a great memory these stones must have. Foro Romano might create a weird visual impression, but nevertheless it is a MUST to see in Rome.
The Roman Forum was amazing. rome was a world power and to see it in ruins now is amazing. Only way to see any attractions is by guided tours. There is a lot of ruined buildings, only a guided tour can let you know what they are. Hope you love to walk.
This was one of the most amazing places that i have ever been too. The only thing was that there was so much, and we didnt know what it was! I highly sugest to get a tour guide or a tourist booklet, so that you know what your looking at. Otherwise its no where near as interesting!
This place looked really neat at night! Rome at night with the lights around the ruins is great. I really enjoyed all of Rome. It feels wonderful walking around at night too. When it is so hot during the summer.
I loved this place so much, it was so unique and unsettling to see such ancient beauty. I went to Rome on a Contiki trip and we got a tour of all of the ruins, it was so amazing. I actually walked by the place where Julius Ceasar was burned! I cant wait to go back.
I love this place neve loved any other place in rome as much as i love this one great service! kind people and nice confy beds!!!
To think that the Ceasars of Rome walked where I walked. It is mind-boggling and awesome. So much history, so much culture every where you turn. Magnificent.
it literally takes you back into ancient rome. no other sight will do it like this place. it is best to tour with a guide book or tour guide then explore by yourself. best value because its free and my most favorite sight in rome.
