Ettore Ximenez built The Monument to Independence in 1921. It consists of 131 bronze sculptures. Inside the Imperial Chapel under the monument, is a crypt holding the remains of Dom Pedro I and Princess Leopoldina. Unfortunately, this monument is in a state of disrepair.
