Overview
There is something oddly fascinating about watching workers at here take sugar and fruit juice mixed with a few other ingredients and turn it all into gourmet jelly beans. Free, guided tours leave every few minutes and walk you through the process from mixing, forming and tumbling to polishing and packaging. The visitor center includes (what else?) a candy store. Visitors get to sample test flavors and rate them for potential marketing. Several San Francisco bus tours are available.
We took 120 second graders to this factory tour. Even though we had to wait a while in line, the students loved it. I want to go back with my family so I can really shop in the visitor center and see all of the fun stuff on the walls. I was not a Jelly Belly fan before, as I prefer chocolate, but this candy is really good. Their candy corn tastes like no other. Really cute place!!!
We went on the weekend, avoid this if you can because the machines aren't operating so you get to see them but nothing is going on. You can see a sample of what happens on video monitors. Good tour, well organized and informative. You get a free bag of jelly belly beans at the end - can't beat that! Afterwards you can wonder around the big gift shop loaded with all kinds of jelly belly items. Kids will LOVE this tour and adults will enjoy it too. Was going to eat at the cafe afterwards but it was too pricey.
The tour was fun and we are going back for a second time. It was fun to get free samples at the end of the tour and see all the cool murals that were made from jelly beans.
The factory tour was fun and interesting and the best part was, of course, the free bag of jelly bellies at the end. I am shocked at how much jelly bellies are if you buy them outside the area and the factory is a great place to buy them in bulk and a little more affordably. The belly flops are great if you don't mind taking a risk on flavor and having more than one bean at a time. The factory has improved and now offer refreshments(at a premium). It's usually wise to come after you've enjoyed your lunch elsewhere, but if you don't have time, they offer fast food type lunch there.
If you like factory tours and have a sweet tooth, this is a great place. Especially for children.
A fast paced walking tour of candy making. A clear wall allows all sized children to view the factory floor, with tv monitors above the walkway playing videos of what is done at each statiion in the way. You must wear the supplied paper hat, and samples are given at the end of the tour. The cafe is ok, and offers "jelly belly pizza". (Just the shape, not the flavor.) Kids younger than 4-5 may be bored with the tour.
