Overview

This city is steeped in history and is full of interesting monuments. It is located nearly 89 kilometers to the southwest of Salamanca. The cathedral marks the transition of architectural styles between the Romanesque and the Gothic. Enrique II's Castle is now a National Parador. The 'Tres Columnas' or three columns at the entrance to the city and the ancient walls and moats surrounding the old town still survive and offer fantastic views of the mountains and plains. In addition to all this, Ciudad Rodrigo is also famous for its Carnival and great food. Be sure to try the typical fried egg dish, huevos fritos con farinato! It's easy to get to the Sierra de Gata mountains from here, which is one of the most outstanding natural areas in the province. It's also feasible to get to the famously wild part of Extremadura called Las Hurdes.
