Overview

This older, yet still beautiful place is actually two former hotels refurbished and combined and placed in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. The buildings are linked together by a lobby filled with attractive wicker furniture. The bay windows out front add a tasteful and refined touch to the hotel's appearance. Your room will either overlook the city or the peaceful courtyard filled with trees. Every room is filled with handsome antiques; fireplaces in the rooms are especially cheery during the winter months.

Quaint, Quiet, Relaxingby Yahoo | 2008-09-10 17:43:11 |

Stayed here for a high school reunion (graduated from HS in France as an Army brat, so our reunions are held anywhere someone puts one together). Had a great stay at the Horton. Room was small but very comfortable. Had a second floor room overlooking the courtyard and next to the elevator, but things were very quiet. Only complaint was the bar didn't open until 1600 hours. Located in the Gaslamp district, so no problem finding a bar or food. Enjoyed the walk to Petco Park for a baseball game. We felt safe and secure for our entire stay. We arrived at approximately 1300 and were given a room immediately so that we could freshen up. Staff were courteous and friendly. We plan to return to San Diego in the future and will most likely stay at the Horton again.

Great Hotel, Perfect Locationby Yahoo | 2008-07-14 15:41:53 |

I was skeptical after reading the reviews on here but booked it anyways. We arrived about 1pm Friday and we got into a nice room right away. The staff was helpful and courteous. The hotel is quaint with decent rooms that include a fireplace and a nice balcony. The location was ideal and we were able to walk to everything. The valet price was a little steep but we found most of the unrestricted parking in the area was about $25 a day. I would definitely stay there again.

Bad Reviews? WHY?by Yahoo | 2008-05-19 04:47:09 |

My wife and I stayed the night at the Horton Grand. She wanted a night away for her birthday and wanted to go downtown in SD Gaslamp District. Being the good husband, I said yes. While looking for a hotel room I stumbled across the Grand Horton but was skeptical after reading the reviews BUT booked it anyways. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room while small was decorated old school style, back in the day . . . way back, early 1900's, but wifey like that. Room was clean. I did myself dumb but not parking with the hotel and opted somewhere else, which was my fault totally, I have nothing bad to say about the Horton Grand. Located in the Gaslamp district, the mecca for downtown SD fun, couldn't have been nicer. Price was a little steep for a night ($220) but you do what you can to make the wife happy.

"Victorian style"=stuffy & uncomfortableby Yahoo | 2008-04-13 16:00:34 |

This may be a place for people who like to stay in "quaint" old-fashoined places but certainly not for the average business traveler. Within hours of checking into this hotel, I had checked myself back out & booked myself into another hotel, even though I had to pay for both rooms. The room gave me the creeps! Horrible garrish lighting, absolutely no natural light, stuffy, tattered old furniture, & the most hard & lumpy bed I've seen in over 150 hotel stays in the past year. If your idea of hotel comfort is stern wooden hard-back chairs & a bed your Grandmother probably slept in the 19th century, & don't mind feeling like you are locked into a dungeon, then his place is for you. Additionally, the cost of the place for any amenities that might be conducive for a weary traveler -aka convenient parking, continental breakfast, room service, mini fridge-are non-existant. The thought of staying in the room was very unsettling & gave me the creeps. The only perk was location to the Gaslamp District.

Beautiful Victorian Rooms. It pays to take a little tour of the premises and see all the history. Rooms were comfortable and cozy. Am staying there again this month. :) Parking is a little steep for my taste, but I think that's pretty common in Cali. $25 a day for parking, that doesn't include the valet tips.

Horrible Customer Service!!by Yahoo | 2007-10-10 19:43:52 |

This hotel had the rudest customer service at the front desk that we have ever dealt with. The night guy, John, was so beyond rude and mean that it gave me a stomache ache. I spoke with the manager after the first night of being treated so horrible, and then the next 2 nights we were there, the guy was even RUDER to us that before! It was disgisting, customer service should be #1 at a ($200+ per night) hotel! I will never recommend this place to anyone. It is not even worth it at all. There are far to many amazing hotels in the Gaslamp district!

Don't Stay There Everby Yahoo | 2007-08-20 17:49:31 |

Checked in on Friday and the room was OK for Friday night. Got a rental car on Saturday and returned at 11:30 PM. There was no one working the valet parking. The night staff person just said it was closed and the hotel could only park 60% of the guests vehicles. There was a bar across the street and ALL meters and parking garages were full. We asked the staff if there was anywhere to park and he just said we would have to wait until something became available. We drove around for 2 hours before we found a meter. There was NO sign or literature anywhere in the hotel room or at the desk stating when the valet closed or showed other options. Also, the courtyard was full of guests laughing and talking until 4 AM. The room walls and floor are so thin we heard the upstairs room until 5 AM. Don't stay here if you want to sleep or park somewhere. Complete lack of interest on employee's part. It was horrible. The room upstairs even used a vacuum cleaned at 3 AM. You could hear every word from all rooms attached. My advice would be to go somewhere else. The street noise is also horrible.

Lots of characterby Yahoo | 2007-08-07 01:38:34 |

This historic hotel is decorated with modern, Victorian style furniture. Everything is new, but made to look old and my husband and I found it a nice change from the typical hotel. There's a lot of historical newspaper articles and photos to view. My favorite was the balony overlooking the courtyard. So often, hotel balconies are closed for liability issues, but these even included chairs. It took us about 10 minutes to walk to Petco Park.

Beds are as hard as the bricks and the pillows are even smallerby Yahoo | 2007-06-28 04:03:42 |

The hotel is in a great location. It is a beautiful hotel also. The room that we got had a little fireplace which was cute. But, the room was the size of a closet so you can imagine the size of the bathroom, along with no countertops. If you are shorter than 5'2", you will not be able to see in the mirror because it's mounted so high. Now the worst part... the bed was terrible. The pillows were the size of a toddler pillow. My husband woke up with a stiff neck and I couldn't move my shoulder/arm for 3 days. I would not go back, for the amount they charge per night, they should invest in real size pillows and good beds.

Run-down and Rudeby Yahoo | 2007-06-19 01:56:19 |

We were looking forward to our stay at the Horton Grand but were dismayed to find the nighttime desk clerk was extremely rude/creepy upon our check-in, and the room turned out to be crummy. When we checked in, our reservation seemed to have no meaning, as there was no room of the type we requested left, and we ended up in a 1st-floor room with a thin curtain between us and the driveway. We were told we could request an upstairs room but we "really needed a good reason" to do so. The room we ended up in featured a 1980s pilly bedspread with a lovely Depression-era cigarette burn. I felt uncomfortable even touching it to push it away. Though the furnishings were indeed quaint, overall the room felt a little worn-out and old. The ceilings and walls were also paper-thin and we could hear all of our neighbors. I did however enjoy the pull-chain toilet and gaslight fireplace. As far as amenities, there were none. Although this is one of the cheaper options in the area with a great location, I would not recommend staying here.
