This glorious example of Victorian architecture Villa Montezuma was built in 1887 for the eccentric author, musician, and spiritualist medium Jesse Sheppard. Replete with all the fancy turned work and enchanting dragon-topped turrets that mark the Victorian style, this well-preserved mansion is now frequently the site of Victorian teas, musicales, Halloween and Victorian Christmas celebrations. Listed on the National Registry of Historical Places, they offer tours and private bookings can be arranged.Open Hours
Fr to Su from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PMThe Villa Montezuma is great for victorian history buffs. It is so beautiful, and feels like you go back in time when you are in it. The atmosphere is kinda strange because it is supposedly haunted, but if you like that kind of thing go on the ghosts and gravestones tour. You will be taken inside at nite where the feeling is eerie. But I love it, and I know you will love the Villa, too.
A 1 hour guided tour provided a view of life in the Victorian era for the rich and famous. The tour is very reasonably priced ($5.00/person) and was thoroughly enjoyed. Although the home is in need of repair and poorly supported by the city of San Diego, it is truly a treasure that should be preserved. The extraordinary images in stained glass of famous authors and writers seemed to take on life lit only by natural sunlight.
