Overview
Located just off the Plaza, this restaurant and cantina is a favorite with locals and visitors. Its charming New Mexico-themed atmosphere creates a one-of-a-kind dining experience. The menu is diverse, offering contemporary meals with a Southwestern flare. The trout, which is slow-cooked in a clay pot, is one of the house specialties. Next door to the restaurant the cantina singers, who double as waiters and waitresses, perform Broadway tunes. The wine list is one of the most extensive in the Southwest. How about some New Mexican food, instead of the un-tasty offerings at La Casa Sena? I have a feeling that someone named Sena is rolling over in his grave at the thought of the minimalism here perpetrated by the chef. Why, even a Frito Pie across the Plaza would have been a more authentically satisfying Santa Fe meal. And don't bother for the entertainment--it's character-free too.
La Casa Sena is a wretched sink hole of depravity: the food is tasteless and served in minuscule portions reminiscent of the bad old days of the 1980s, when diners everywhere received three chickpeas on a vast white expanse of plate served by a superior git posing as a waiter, all under the guise of the now-discredited Nouvelle Cuisine movement, a kind of rich world plague designed to further starve the dieting masses. In addition, please note that La Casa Sena is ridiculously expensive, staffed by poorly dressed waiters, and somehow affected with the sort of preciousness that all well-established bores thrive upon. Go at your own peril!
Awfully flavor-free food of the sort which one would expect in Britain. What it's doing in New Mexico is a mystery. Beyond the pedestrian yet pretentious fare was the badly dressed, slovenly gang of waiters. I felt as though we were in the streets or alleyways of Anytown, U.S.A! If this place is representative of Santa Fe, why, the Emperor has no clothes or they're all on mindbenders. Perhaps this is what occurs when a native population gets hijacked by outsiders who have their heads in the clouds. At that altitude, it is best to keep a clear head and avoid La Casa Sena, because it is a mere mirage.
We were dressed to the nines and there were four of us. The tee-shirted staff stuck us in a room of our own, and persisted in boring us with their ill-clad, casual manners. The food, which might have made the lack of atmosphere and unprofessional service less important, was an abomination. Vegetarians were punished by a lack of flavor, while meat-eaters were deprived of taste and substance. One of us commented that we could have stayed at his patio and fired-up the grill. The hundreds of dollars spent at La Casa Sena were a huge waste. We never grasped why this place is vaunted. To make matters worse, hidden away from the other diners and potential atmosphere, our only view was the Plaza lawn, where people were letting their dogs evacuate ...
I was alone and only had a short time to eat. I happened on this delightful restaurant. It was expensive, but I ordered this appetizer salad with duck that was plenty for a meal and reasonably priced. It was fantastic, too. The waitstaff was attentive and extremely nice. The place was charming and historic. A real Santa Fe experience. I hope to go back when I'm not so rushed for the full experience of the place.
