Overview

This beautiful building was inaugurated in 1857 and was built by the architects Brunes de Baines, Henault and Aldunate. It was remodeled in 1870 and 1906 because of a fire and an earthquake, respectively. It is decorated with good taste, with predominantly red colors in the upholstery, the rugs, and the curtains. The walls and floors are old marble. It seats 1,400 people. The Philharmonic Orchestra and the Municipal Ballet of Santiago perform here. There are also operas, ballet, and music with famous Chilean and international artists. Also in the Chapel room there are art exhibits, and in the philharmonic hall, musical camera presentations, plays, video showings and conferences. For the international features, it is recommended to reserve your tickets well in advance.

Love the balletby Yahoo | 2006-11-16 22:10:25 |

I feel differently from the other reviewer. Like many cities worldwide, the arts are suffering. However, we attended the ballet a month ago and found it to be an excellent performance at a fraction of the cost we'd pay to see a show of similar quality in the US. We could not have enjoyed ourselves more. Support the arts, and do not hesitate to take in this beautiful venue.

Worthy of major boycottby Yahoo | 2006-10-06 10:22:07 |

While a beatiful venue, at this very moment (2006) the Teatro Municipal of Santiago, Chile, is passing through the most tragic episode of its history, caused by poor administration of its artistic and financial resources. The Cultural Corporation responsible for administering this artistic centre has suspended unnecessarily the entire 2006 Opera and Concert season. They have done this in the worst manner possible, unilaterally, arbitrarily, and with an abusive attitude, under false pretence, effectively dismantling their excellent 50-year-old Philharmonic Orchestra while blaiming it for the crisis. Underpaid Polish amateur musicians are being brought in to run some of the shows. I encourage you to not support these efforts.
