Overview

This was built in 1769 by Joseph de la Vega and is one of the best-preserved colonial houses in Santiago. It is also a National Monument. It's name derives from the red brickwork on the first floor and the red stucco on the second.

Today it functions as the Museum of Santiago: a library that covers pre-Hispanic Santiago up to the period of the republic. It is also the headquarters of the Santiago Municipal Tourist Office.

Entrance is free on Sundays and holidays; otherwise admission is $200 for children, $300 for students and pensioners and $500 for adults.

Open Hours

I love the colonial architecture of the building. I also liked the stories that were displayed, like the one about the arrival of the new Governor of Chile in the 1600's who upon his arrival to the country brought the wrath of the country's bishop upon himself because he visited the beautiful daughters of a prominent person before visiting the bishop as per protocol!
