Overview

In 1819 Bernardo O'Higgins set aside 85 hectares of land for the foundation of this cemetery. There are some large lavish mausoleums to be seen, as well as simple tombs that are surrounded by leafy trees, gardens and lanes with beautiful sculptures. Here rest the bodies of every president of Chile who has died, except Gabriel González Videla. Notice Arturo Alessandri (1868-1950); Eduardo Frei Montalva (1911-1982) and Salvador Allende (1909-1973) among others. Entering by Avenida La Paz you will find the Monument to Suffering by the French sculptor Carrier Belleuse, below which are the remains of the victims of the Iglesia de la Companía from 1863.
