The Monasterio de San Francisco or Monastery of San Francisco was built on a hill overlooking the entrance of the city by Alsonso de Espinar and Rodrigo de Liendo in 1556. The lovely Plateresque doorway features the cordon of Saint Francis carved in stone around the order's coat of arms. The chapel of the third order is the best example of Spanish architecture in Santo Domingo; it appears to have been built in the 18th Century.
