Natural Heritage
Overview
This protected area, located on the Cordillera Central, is the home, along with the adjacent
Parque José Armando Bermúdez, of the
Pico Duarte. The twelve most important rivers of the island traverse this unique reserve, where temperatures oscillate from 12-18 degrees Celsius, reaching below zero numbers during the winter. A variety of flora is preserved in this park, where pinewood trees and orchids abound. Likewise, local fauna, including the Hispanionan parrot and the Cigua Palmera, the national bird; as well as mammals, such as the rare
solenodonte, can be found here.
