Overview

The Hokkaido Shrine, which was founded in 1869, is relatively new compared to many of the famous shrines in Japan, but it is the most important one in Hokkaido. When it was consecrated by the Meiji Emperor (1868-1912), it was dedicated to three deities connected to successful development. It is now home to the Sapporo Matsuri, which takes place in June every year. The Shrine is particularly popular in May, when more than 1200 cherry trees blossom and provide a fabulous umbrella of pink.
