Overview

Mt. Moiwa is in the very center of Sapporo. At a height of 531 meters, it offers a fabulous panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. You can see right into the distant Sea of Japan and the Shokambetsu mountains. Mt. Moiwa itself has a rich natural environment, covered with forests, so the colors of the mountains change with the seasons. The gondola ride up or down the mountain is spectacular especially at night for those with romance on their minds. Check the website for seasonal timings and details. This place is open daily from 10. 30 AM.

Take the ropeway in Winter, walk in Summerby Yahoo | 2005-10-30 03:30:34 |

The ropeway itself? Well, it serves it's purpose, which is to get you to the top of Mt Moiwa so you can look at the view. Unfortunately that generally isn't so great. I hiked up the mountain between 7 and 10 times, as well as getting the ropeway up when I first arrived in the middle of winter. (Don't waste your time trying to climb it in winter. The snow is too deep, and it would be downright dangerous). If you are going to go up, go when you figure you're going to see the nicest, least smog filled scene. Evening, when the first snow is heading in, or it's clear enough to see the mountain range in the direction of Jozenki. I've heard you can see Ditzetzan on a clear day, but I never spotted it. In winter when the entire place is blanketed in snow, and it's your first time in snow, it a nice place to visit. Especially as you pass the cemetary and two shrines overhead on the ropeway. The larger white shrine can't be reached on the ropeway, you've got to walk up. A very easy short walk in summer. In winter, the ice and snow make getting up the stairs near the entrance of the shrine very difficult as the railing is buried in the snow and you've got nothing to hold onto to. If you live in Fushimi or one of the other suburbs at the base of Mt Moiwa, hiking up is a nice couple of hours exercise when it's snow free. Just don't go in Golden Week as there's actually a queue up the mountain. As a tourist, it's interesting to see Japanese hikers all kitted up with the latest hiking technology (bear bells included!) walking up this comparatively easy mountain. Sorry, I can't remember the price of the ropeway, but you get different options. The ropeway is actually split into two sections. The first part (from the base of the mountain) is in a gondola, and the second is on a chair lift. You have a choice as to whether you want to buy tickets for both parts or just one, as well as single or return.
