Overview
Located right on the University of Washington campus, Burke Museum is the Northwest's only major museum of natural history. Exhibits are separated into three main divisions of anthropology, geology and zoology focus on the natural and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest. View totem poles, fossils including the Northwest's only dinosaur skeleton and many wonders of taxidermy. View displays of Native American art, gems and minerals native to the area.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PMFirst caveat - took forever to find the place. Second caveat - UW charges $11 (yes, $11!) to park. And that doesn't include the additional $8 you have to pay to get inside. Third caveat - museum is not as comprehensive as reviews had led me to believe. Seems to be geared more to children, which is fine if you're in a children's museum. I recommend the Royal BC Museum in Victoria for a more comprehensive overview of the Pacific NW.
I've been to this museum a few times and have always enjoyed the exhibits they have on display (despite the fact that it's a fairly static collection). You can learn a lot about the Puget Sound region's natural history and there are pleanty of skeletons and stuffed creatures to look at. There's also some great stuff on Native Americans and even some Asian exhibits that are very interesting. Expect to spend 3-4 hours here if you want to see everything. The only negative is the UW campus', which extends to the Burke Museum's, parking situation. You're better off visiting on weekends to avoid the student parking fiasco.
