After reading some of the reviews, I have come to the conclusion that the persons who wrote them didn't view with a complete understanding and openness the magnificence of this architectural beauty and collection of the magnificense of the arts and crafts of the Chinese. Don't miss this museum or you'll have by passed one of life's great educational and visual wonders.

This large museum is central Shanghai has everything to get a persons atention. It has many display including Jade Gallery (my favourite), Ceramics Gallery, Bronze Gallery (really cool), Sculpture Gllery (interesting), Coin Gallery (really interesting coins from long ago). I like the Museum of Shanghai but I think the Glembow Museum in Calgary is much much better. This is alright for China. A large step for Shanghai but a small step for Calgary.

I must say that its my first time having to pay (RMB40) to get into a museum!!! It's an over-rated museum. What a dissapointment!! I expected more than just items contributed by individual owners! Yes, there were many levels & I expected to spend at least 3 hrs as everyone has recommended but my husband & I spent only 45 mins coz' the artifacts were just so boring. Not a proper insight of China's history. Waste of time for me.

Its a bit hard to get to but well worth it, expect to spend at least 3 hours here as there are over 6000 exhibits on 4 floors. Theres the bronze gallery, sculture gallery, ceramics gallery, coin gallery, chinese minority gallery, jade gallery and the furniture gallery. Use the audio tour handset for a more detailed guide at a little extra cost. There is a cafe inside if you want to take a break and a shop too for retail terapy. Very cultural, informative, educational and very interesting visit. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't know why this place has only 3 stars... this museums is excellent! A good collection on display. I would say that everyone who goes to Shanghai should visit the Shanghai Museum!

In such a city of hustle and bustle, this is an island of serenity and erudition. So many pieces to see! You may wish to spend half day there, if you wonna go through every collection. They are beautifully juxtaposed and the museum boasts of good facilities like guiding service. If you wonna learn sth. about chinese history within a short period of time, this museum you can't miss.

Not as good as US European museums, but working towards it.

I really liked this museum. Even though it's smaller than many of the major museums I've been in other places in the world (eg Louvre in Paris, Met in NYC, MFA in Boston), I really enjoyed my visit. I was able to see everything within a morning and bit of the afternoon. The interior of the building was beautiful; I thought the jade exhibit was done very well as well as the furniture exhibit. Finally, it's very centrally located--right next to the People's Square and we were able to see other touristy sites nearby afterwards.

A relatively new museum, the Shanghai Museum houses wonderful collections and a good gift shop. The museum arranges items by type rather than by historical period; I particularly liked the furniture and jade exhibitions. The main gift shop is nice, but skip the antique section of the gift shop (located off the restaurant on the second floor) - the selection is undistiguished and the items are overpriced. All in all, one of my favorite places in Shanghai!

I spent over four hours looking through the museum. My feet were so sore from walking on the polished stone floors that I could hardly stand, but I was, after seeing the bronze, determined to see everything. I was astonished to immediatly recognise the West lake in Hangjoue in a painting painted in 530 B.C. that I had visited only a few days earlier. I strongly recommend a visit to everyone going to Shanghai. You will not be dissapointed.Allow at least 4 hours. I will revisit and allocate more time(and wear more comfortable shoes). Human history going back 30 plus centuries makes our 200 years puny.
