Overview

Since its opening in June 1933, Clifford Pier has seen multitudes of immigrants setting foot in Singapore for the first time. Constructed to replace Johnston Pier, it has a simple but unique architecture with an interesting roof comprising concrete arched trusses in a delightful riband form. It was designed by the Public Works Department (then headed by Frank Dorrington Ward) and was named after Sir Hugh Charles Clifford, Governor of the Straits Settlements. The pier is still in operation today, albeit with much less activity.

Located just to the south of the Raffles Place MRT is the old Clifford Pier. A good example of colonial contrustion and worth seeing for how people came into Singapore when travel was done by ocean liner or tramp frieghter. Nowadays it is the home to boat tour operators who will shake you down for a tour (if you do go, be sure to bring your passport as you have to reclear customs). What is left is pretty sparse. There are some gift/convienience shops...food stalls. But nothing really to convince you to stick around after a boat tour or just to see a bit of old Singapore.
