Overview

Always the seat of St. John's government, The Battery with its signature red roof was built in 1825 as a courthouse and prison to mete out justice to the slaves that fueled the island's agrarian economy. Those days are long gone, and this imposing waterfront structure now houses the offices of the Administrator, an appointed mayor-like position. While there are no official tours, you are welcome to stroll the nicely planted and historic grounds. A few picnic tables are tucked away near the water. There is no admission charge.
