Overview
A gift to the City of St. Louis from 19th-century merchant Henry Shaw (who was also responsible for the adjacent Missouri Botanical Garden), this park was laid out in the mid-19th century as a Victorian walking park. Much of the park is car-free, with winding roads for walking and biking. Unique flamboyant Victorian pavilions may be reserved for picnics notably the Turkish and Chinese pavilions and the lovely "Ruins" area is a restful spot with a pond and fountain. Other features include a beautifully restored Victorian bandstand, tennis courts and a small wading pool.
I truly love Tower Grove Park. I live in the Shaw neighborhood and I enjoy walking to and in the park after dinner, with my children, or alone. I also work-out in this park every weekend. I don't even call it beautiful that is too simple a word, this park will enchant you. There are large trees and a beautiful long, winding and wide walk way. Pretty much every single saturday you can catch a wedding there. People go there to take wedding pictures. There are many ponds and gazebos and there are always free concerts and band playing. There are at least three separate playgrounds for children and a pool/sprinkler. I love living in this neighborhood and this park and is a big reason why. I know all this may make the park seem very busy but it's so large all of the activities can be going on and it still feel quiet and serene enough for a private picnic. If you come to St. Louis you have to see this park.
My Parents grew up in Tower Grove. They swam in the tiny pool and learned to ride bikes on the paths at Tower Grove. I myself grew up swimming in the same pool, I played on the playgrounds, and learned to ride a bike. I live in Phoenix now, and I try to bring my daughter there as often as possible to catch fireflies, and play in the pool. There is not a more beautiful park to stroll through. I truly miss Tower Grove park.
