Overview

Waldermarsudde is a museum which exhibits Prince Eugen's work as influenced by Cubism. The museum was designed by a famous architect who created the Thiel House. Apart from the Prince's own work, there is an impressive collection of Swedish art, which is dated between the 1880s and the 1940s. Outside the museum, there is a thousand-year-old oak tree.

I went to look at the beautiful palace in its waterside setting. It is a beautiful, tranquil place to visit and the journey there is also full of lovely things to see. I was not expecting to find such an eclectic mixture of art or to discover so much about Prince Eugene! He was an extremely talented artist himself. I particularly liked his painting of the Tree and Cloud: it is awe inspiring. He encouraged artists to be creative and in turn he was able to display their work. He seemed to be a free spirit, a king, gentle man and benefactor. The art museum in the grounds is testament to his friendship with and encouragement of the artistic people he befriended. His legacy continuues to this day as there are different collections of modern art on display throughout the year. The grounds themselves are an interesting open museum, full of surprises. You must also find the Oak Tree which is two thousand years old! If the weather is good, take the bus (44 or 47), view the house, picnic at the water's edge, explore the grounds and finish with the Art Gallery. I wish I was there now!
