Overview

A Tokugawa shogun established Tokaiji Temple as a tribute to a favored priest-advisor of his. And indeed the hey days of the temple were during Tokugawa times (1600-1868) when it was a major Buddhist complex. The pickle called takuan, which is made out of radishes, was named after the Zen priest who provided the recipe. He is buried in the cemetery outside the temple grounds. A pickling stone lies on top of the grave! Admission: Free.
