Overview

Pedro Iznaga built a sprawling hacienda in the middle of the San Luis Valley with the fortune he made from the slave trade. He erected a 44-meter high watch tower with 184 steps, some 50 meters from the main house, to control the slaves who were more than willing to escape. He would also mark the hour by tolling a bell. The vernacular and industrial-style tower has become a symbol of this legendary region, despite its contrast with the surrounding area. It does in fact allow for a panoramic view of Trinidad.

A little scary at first but totally worth it!by Yahoo | 2007-05-15 17:22:22 |

I loved the fact that it had its own story to tell aside from the town itself. Many say the man who built this tower also did it to impress a certain lady whom he later locked up at the very top of the tower because she was in love with another man. The stairs are tiny and because of the wind coming from all directions it can get a little shaky (enhance why I said scary). But once you reach the very top and you stop to think and take in the beautiful scenery, you almost may not want to leave! Completely worth it and I would go back in a second.
