Overview

This attraction is to Tucson what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, except it's more ancient. Founded in 1700 by the Spanish missionary Father Kino, 10 miles south of what is now downtown Tucson on the Tohono O'odham Indian reservation, San Xavier del Bac is considered one of the finest examples of Mexican folk baroque architecture. Indian crafts shops and a cafe are nearby. The parish is still active, so please be respectful of religious activities when visiting.

Open Hours

Mo to Su from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM

A treatby Yahoo | 2008-07-03 16:27:07 |

Because they are restoring the mission, it was not a great time to get pictures of the church. I ended up buying postcards instead. The church is absolutely breathtaking, and the museum was fascinating. I can't believe that it is free!!! The grotto area was very moving, and I wished there had been more candles to light, but they were all already lit. If you are the least bit religious, you should make this a must destination. Even those who aren't religious would appreciate the architecture of this beautiful and awe-inspiring historical landmark!

AWESOME!by Yahoo | 2008-02-09 21:39:38 |

I live in Tucson, and if you enjoy history and churches this is the place to go. Along with Saguaro Monument East, Desert Museum, and possibly the expensive and crowded Sabino Canyon I would visit here. It is an ACTIVE church so please be respectful. You can attend Mass there also. They sell the BEST indian fry bread w/ honey. Worth the calories. No, I don't work there!

Under constructionby Yahoo | 2007-10-30 18:28:48 |

The Mission was under construction when we visited this month (Sept 2007). So photographic opportunities were minimal. Otherwise, the church is beautiful inside! Worth a visit.

Not a Museum or Tourist Siteby Yahoo | 2007-07-24 22:11:45 |

San Xavier del Bac is an active parish, not a Tourist site or a Museum. If you go, please be courteous and respectful of that fact. Dress appropriately and act as you would in your own house of worship. Too many times when I have visited this church I have witnessed tourists acting inappropriately and dressed as if they were going to a party. One tour group wore their plastic green St. Patrick's Day hats and strings of beads into the church...please show some respect for a house of worship, even if you do not share the faith.

Looking forward to visiting againby Yahoo | 2007-07-01 19:25:47 |

I really liked this place, it's so beautiful!!! I lived in Tucson for about 3 years and enjoyed visiting the Mission while there. Any time out of state guest came to visit this was a must. Before moving away and going through a divorce, I found it calming to go there and think about things. It really helped me. I plan on visiting the area again and the Mission is on my list to see again. I can't wait.

This was a beautiful place. I'd love to go back. I went in April so the temps were not to hot. May not be interesting for children under 12. Nice gift shop where I bought a rosary.

beautiful and freeby Yahoo | 2007-04-12 18:58:44 |

This mission is so beautiful. It is still used as a church, with mass being held in same place it was over 200 years ago. It is open to the public at no cost but donations for renovation are accepted. It is hard to comprehend the design and artistry that went into the mission back in the 1700's when they did not have the tools and equipment of today. I find the mission relaxing and spirtually uplifting, even though I don't practice the Catholic relegion.
