The locals commonly refer to this high elevation peak, just west of downtown, as "A" Mountain because since 1915, University of Arizona students have whitewashed the letter "A" on its eastern slope. Its history, however, goes much further back: it was at the foot of this mountain that the earliest traces of human settlements in the Tucson area were found. This place offers the best view of Tucson downtown and its surrounding. Its close proximity to downtown makes it a quick 10 minutes drive to the peak.
The view is panoramic and daunting. It's hard to take it all in at one time. The expansive valley stretches below tantilizing both the senses and the imagination of what Tucson's past may have been like and what Tucson's future could be. It's exciting to realize that early settlers took in the same view to look out for pending Indian attacks. An amazing place.
