Overview

The "Steffl" is arguably one of the world s most enchanting Gothic cathedrals. A 12th-century construction at heart, it was renovated in Gothic style between 1304-1433. Its Northern Tower, standing at a height of 70m, was redesigned according to Renaissance aesthetics in 1579 and the interior was given a baroque slant following the Counter Reformation. St. Stephen's Cathedral's famed bell, the "Pummerin," weighing no less than 21 tons, suffered considerable fire damage in World War II. It has since been repaired and is now used to mark special occasions, such as to ring in the new year. It also houses remains of 11,000 people in the catacombs, which can be seen by the visitors.

I would have to rank this cathedral one of the most depressing churches I have ever seen. There are so many in the City of Vienna that are most impressive - you can really skip this one.

Great view of the city!by Yahoo | 2007-10-22 10:45:19 |

The atmosphere is very gothic, the architecture is amazing and a trip with the elevator is mandatory. You get the best view of the city!

Lovely but no Koln Domby Yahoo | 2006-10-29 04:27:42 |

The church it self is a beautiful site to behold. It does not come up to the same level as the Dom in K

okby Yahoo | 2006-06-16 10:56:54 |

not bad. Seen so many old churches and whatnot its hard to say which ones are "better", but the location was very nice, with a lot going on in the square and plenty of restaurants and whatnot...

Sky high...by Yahoo | 2006-06-14 06:55:32 |

I remember that I was there during the renovation of this church. The church is located in the middle of the city, right next to the shopping street, and is also the highest dome in the country. I took the elevator to get on the top of the dome. Believe it or not that I wasn't feeling well once I was on the top. Because it's sky high and it was the first time that I was pretty sure I was afraid of the height. I felt totally dizzy though the view was incredibly beautiful. It's like you can see the whole city of Vienna from there. Unfortunately,I was faint and wasn't make it longer than 5 minutes up there. Any way, it's one of the spot that you couldn't miss in Vienna..

over ratedby Yahoo | 2006-06-02 07:51:30 |

The cathedral was highly over rated. we climbed the endless steps in to see a view of the city, but it was not worth the climb. if you suffer from claustrophobia DO NOT GO

Beautifulby Yahoo | 2006-05-13 14:20:55 |

My trip to Vienna was for Christmas so the Cathedral was full of activities so we got to see about 4 Masses celebrated there by the Cardinal of Vienna so the cathedral was full of people, full of light and full of music ! Also the great thing is that it's located right in the center of Vienna !

Tower is a disappointmentby Yahoo | 2005-11-24 17:39:46 |

The Stephansdom is majestic and free. The tower stairs cost Euro 3 to climb, but the views are obstructed when you get to the top due to construction and you cannot go outside. Not value for money at this point. Check before paying Euro 3 that the construction no longer obstructs the view.
