Overview
This enormous cemetery spanning 2.4 squared kilometers of the southern part of Vienna, is the final resting place of 3 million residents of Vienna. There are two very different areas in particular that merit a visit: the old Jewish quarter, and the grove dedicated to honored personalities. On the first visit, one might note a morbid atmosphere in the cemetery, in which more than 500 important figures are remembered by magnificent gravestones—from Johannes Brahms to Hans Moser to Falco. In the center of the area, a "liars" memorial is erected for the secessionist Max Hegele. A tip for visitors: best kit yourself out with a plan from the viewing point at the second entrance, otherwise you might never navigate your way around (or out of) the many graves.
