Overview

The National Gallery houses an extensive collection of European and American art in two spectacular buildings. In the grand, neoclassical West Building, Rembrandt, Rubens and Gainsborough are well-represented. The permanent collection includes works from the 13th to 20th Centuries including a section devoted to Impressionism. An underground concourse with a cafeteria, an excellent gift shop and a walled-in waterfall takes you to the East Building. Designed by I.M. Pei, this triangular building is a key city landmark and home to 20th-century art works and temporary exhibitions.

This is a must see for all ages. Exhibits are well displayed, refreshing. See them near or afar or from top. Painting and sculptures; larger and small.

Incredible but Time Consumingby Yahoo | 2007-01-01 15:54:37 |

The National Gallery is an incredible museum, but takes all day or even longer to do it right. Be sure to pick up the free audio guide wands at the door and get there early. Also pace yourself and take breaks throughout as your back and feet will start to to ache. For us we made to sure to hit the museum periods that interested us most early on. The Impressionist displays are not to be missed with Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Degas. Well worth the time. Best time to visit is in the winter.

Great place to visit while in Washington DC. All museums are great to visit. If you want something a little more upbeat or following a visit to the Holocaust museum this is a good one to visit.
