Overview

From beneath the 90-foot (30-meter) portico of Mount Vernon, visitors can gaze across an expanse of sloping lawn to the Potomac River, a mile wide, as its flows past George Washington's home. Costumed guides narrate the history of the elegant mansion and of the surrounding buildings, which have been preserved to reflect the days when the first president resided here. Visitors are invited to walk around the 500-acre (200-hectare) estate, tour the buildings and participate in the "Hand-on History" exhibits that recreate farming techniques and colonial games.

My hubby's favorite part of our DC tripby Yahoo | 2009-01-04 16:44:47 |

Incredibly beautiful grounds and building. The staff was very kind and knowledgable. The tour was a little rushed, but it's obviously a busy place. Make sure to see the 16-sided barn and the museum's collection of Presidential china, it's very distinctive.

A must see!by Yahoo | 2009-01-02 16:25:28 |

Great value for your buck. Staff was extremely helpful. The grounds are beautiful. If you live in the area the season pass is the best value. We saw all ages ranging from toddlers to elderly.

A bit of history overload, but also beautiful sceneryby Yahoo | 2006-11-29 20:40:23 |

If you go to Mt Vernon, be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to see everything. The Museum is very interesting, and the grounds are pretty. There is a lot of very educational stuff for kids about farming, the revolutionary war and Washington's life in general.
