Long before the establishment of Washington, DC, Alexandria was a town centered in politics and commerce. The founding fathers often met here to discuss freedom and revolution. Visit Robert E. Lee's boyhood home and that of his father, General "Lighthorse" Harry Lee, a Revolutionary War hero. Nearby Christ Church is where George Washington worshipped. Stroll down King Street with its many quaint shops and restaurants or duck down one of the side streets, many of which have their original cobblestones. Alexandria is 30 minutes south of Washington. Take the George Washington Memorial Parkway. After visiting Old Town in July, my family and I quickly abandoned plans to build a home in Maryland and buy in Old Town. We fell in love with the charm, festive atmosphere, the happy people, the shops, the fitness trails, parks, and various other amenities too many to list. We closed on our home at the end of October and continue to be enchanted by our lovely home, built in 1830, and this wonderful community. Halloween on Lee Street was a fun-filled and safe celebration enjoyed by all ages! Our neighbors are extremely friendly and helpful and we walk pretty much everywhere. Our children enjoy the waterfront, parks, and boat rides down the Potomac. There is always something going on in Old Town!! Yes, visitor parking is a challenge but there are many public parking garages in addition to metered parking that will let you avoid tickets. Before moving, my family and I would visit via metro which was an easy and enjoyable way to get to Old Town. The stop on King Street brings you within about a mile walk to the waterfront and if you can’t make the walk, the free trolley will pick you up and take you the entire way. The shops are higher end shops but there are always bargains to be found. We’ve also discovered that window shopping (especially for antiques) can be just as enjoyable if we’re not in the market to buy. The restaurants also vary in atmosphere and price and there is certainly something for every taste and budget. There are plenty of tours that will take you to the most interesting and historic sites. All in all, it’s a wonderful place to visit (and live) and that is the reason Old Town is always bustling with happy visitors.
Old Towne Alexandria is one of the few places in America in December 2008 that is doing such brisk retail and restaurant business that they'd just as soon you'd stay away. Finding street parking in this densely packed enclave the evening of Friday Dec. 5th seemed miraculous, but this writer's elation was short-lived. After spending close to $200 in 2 retail shops and an additional $150 at a King Street restaurant, I was dismayed to emerge and find a $40.00 parking ticket on my car with no meter in sight. Clearly the retailers and dining establishments of Old Towne would prefer that I shop and dine in Georgetown, Penn Quarter, Adams Morgan or Dupont Circle. Added to this, the stench of cigarette smoke in my hair and clothiing upon emerging from said restaurant leads this writer to believe that the city fathers of Old Towne are not only indifferent to my wallet, they want me dead.
If you're coming to the DC area, this is the place to come, With cool Tapas bars, clubs, and restaurants, you can't visit DC without coming here. Old Town is very upper-scale without over doing it. It may be a little expensive for some, but it is worth it.
I like the cozy quiet small town feel of Old Town. It is nice to go there to just relax and unwind. I steal away to Old Town Alexandria every chance I get.
this place is the cutest and most historic town i've been to. you have the old fire house, the church that Washington would go to and Robert E. Lee grew up. Theres a bunch of little shops and old couble roads and one of the smallest houses in America.
I love this place! As long as you stay on King street, you'll feel like Ben Franklin! I just want to wrap this town up and put it in my pocket. That's how much I dig this town.
Thought the restaurants were over priced and not that great. People were unfriendly and was much too fast paced for a relaxing vacation. Was not a real nice place to visit and really glad I don't live there.
We loved visiting Old Town Alexandria, it is very quaint and extremely busy little place. wE enjoyed all the little shops and numerous restaurants. We took the dinner cruise and love it. We also loved our stay at the Almost Heaven Bed and Breakfast just a few minutes from the Old Town Area. Almost Heaven was heavely coming back to the swimming pool and the hot jacuzzi after our tours all day. The breakfast were wonderful. I enjoyed my Belgium waffles and the fixings. Our host family were very accomodating. Oh don't forget the beds are the most comfortable ever. Just loved our experience of the Washington and Alexandria areas.
Old Town is a quaint blast to the past! Absolutely gorgeous with a strange mix of past and present! After visiting I truly started thinking about moving there. Great crowd. Amazing shops and all so close to D.C.
After moving here six years ago, I still can't get enough of Old Town Alexandria. Although there is an infinite selection of attractions in the D.C. & surrounding area to see, but Old Town continues to awe me. I often take my out-of-town guests for a stroll here and have yet to hear a complain about that tour! :-) Anytime of the year you visit, there will be something that will attract you. The shops, the food, the quietness, the charm, the lively sounds of jazz or music when special events take place like the "Italian Festival" or the "Lighting of the Christmas Tree". Sundays in the Summer are superb! Bring a blanket, a picnic basket and your soccer/volleyball & join the locals! Enjoy!
