Overview

In 1852 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, a white congregation sold its building to its black members and Shiloh Baptist Church was established. By 1861, it had grown to 750 members, most of whom were slaves. When the Union Army offered safe passage to all blacks from Fredericksburg to Washington, many Shiloh members came here. Meeting in a small shanty, they continued to worship together and were also taught to read and write. In 1863, Shiloh was recognized as a true church and ordained its first pastor. In the 137 years since then, there have been only five other pastors.

wanting to visit Shiloh as soon as i canby Yahoo | 2007-08-20 21:25:24 |

I really liked the beautiful pictures and the song the lady sang on the church video of the interior was just awsome especially during the christmas season. I don't know the title of the song but I think it is "Come to Jesus" Which I know that if I come to visit, I will surely meet the presence of Jesus there too. I live in Bluefield WV and am the pianist for Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Myers told me about the great work they did to get the church renovated a fiew years ago. I met them when they were doing prayer and devotions to the senior citizens in the home visits. I can't wait for the opportunity to visit with youall. May the Lord bless and keep you always. Your friend Monika.

Disgracefulby Yahoo | 2007-04-26 03:43:25 |

Shiloh Baptist Church's numerous vacant properties dotting the surrounding neighborhood are a major un-neighborly turn off. Tales of the un-neighborly conduct in which Shiloh is constantly engaged (from parking disputes to fighting restaurants' liquor licenses but not those of liquor stores!) are also are a turn off. Given how some of Shiloh's members act in public meetings (videos on the web abound of folks at ANC meetings), I want nothing more to do with this church.

Experience true worshipby Yahoo | 2005-01-11 01:07:16 |

My worship experience at Shiloh was AWESOME. The preaching by Pastor Smith was bible-based, inspiring, and uplifting. The music by both the Senior Choir and the Gospel Choir gave you a wide variety, and was well performed. The congregation was warm, and made me feel welcome. Im seriously considering joining this church.
