Overview
The image of five marines and a navy corpsman raising an American flag atop Mount Suribachi during World War II is known to every American schoolchild. Seen in person, the bronze 78-foot statue is sure to stir emotions. The sculpture near Arlington National Cemetery, commemorates the 6,800 soldiers who died during World War II in order to capture the tiny Japanese island of Iwo Jima. Today, the memorial is dedicated to all U.S. Marines who died in battle. A Marine Parade is held at 7pm Tuesdays throughout the summer.
My first trip to the Memorial. As a former Marine and Vietnam Veteran it was very moving for me.
I loved the way its easy to see what you want and to skip the parts you dont. I saw everything I was interested in. My kids really enjoyed the movie.
I thought is was outstanding. The workmenship is very very good. You can even see the viens in thier hands. And they have expressions on thier faces. It is a bonus for our country to have such a work of art as a Memorial to WWII Vets. The only thing I could add is that they need to add more benches around the memorial both facing and facing away. The view of downtown DC across the Patomic River is really nice. I could have sat there for awhile just looking out at Lincoln, Washington Memorials, and the Capitol Building. What a capitol city we have.
The history of both the event and what the statue represents. This statue was built on donations, inpired by a photograph taken in Iwo Jima during War world II. This statue is in honor for all those that have gone before us, in all engagements in which the Marine Corps has been involved. It is the epitome of our military and what they do for our freedom. I remember seeing this when I was 12 and my dad took us to D.C. It's pretty awesome to see although at the time I didn't know what it was for.
The scenery and landcape surrounding was perfectly placed. Everything was perfect. My family enjoyed the statue and hope to return someday. The trip was fun for the whole family. This is a must-see attraction.
The Marine Corps War Memorial is, to me, a perfect symbol of American courage and willingness to pay whatever price necessary to preserve freedom. I try to visit and photograph this beautiful statue every time I am in our nation's capital. It is difficult to tell from photos just how large and impressive this memorial actually is in person. The detail is amazing, and the view of Washington, D.C., from the memorial is spectacular. If you go, try to imagine the sounds of soldiers cheering amidst the crackle of gunfire as Old Glory is raised on Suribachi. Keep in mind that three of the six young men raising the flag died soon after Feb. 23, 1945 and realize that Marines just like them are fighting and dying for America this very day. SEMPER FI!
My son lives in Arlington Temporarily while attending college. We finally went and glad we did. This monument is beautifully sculpted, is very imposing...I had no idea how large it was. It's a unique monument dedicated to not just to Iwo Jima, but to all US campaigns. It's situated outside the Marine base and adjacent to a section of the National cemetery on a hill overlooking the city. You can see the Washington Monument from the hill as well.
I walk down there all of the time. I live a few hundred yards away. It's a beautful monument and allows a nice view of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol.
