Overview

The second president, John Adams, was the first to live in the White House in 1801. Originally called the "Executive Mansion," it earned the nickname "White House" after its marble exterior was whitewashed to cover burn marks from damage by the War of 1812. Student and military veteran group tours are available with advance notice. The White House occasionally closes without notice for official functions.

It was very interesting especially getting a guided tour from a friend. I had never been to DC before and thought that it would be a huge building but to to my surprise it was quite small considering its purposes.

Got a tour. I absolutely love it. I am a huge history buff and love presidential history and i was in heaven. Standing were great men have stood, gazing at the portraits (especially Reagan) will give you chills...ps avoid the lady holding her 24/7/365 vigil since 1981...I engaged her for about 15 mins...NUTJOB!

I loved it. It is smaller than you might expect. I got a tour and was able to go inside, before 9/11. I recently went back, and I have to say it's not half as good not being able to go inside. Still good though.

My 1st visit, i just went out the front and ventured on my own. the white house is heaps smaller in real life but it is very beautiful. the number of tourists/protestors/locals around the area kind of ruin the atmosphere because then u can't get a very good view. but i was lucky enought to be there when party guests were arriving for a lunch with the president no doubt. was a very nice experience and no visit to DC would be complete without a trip to the whitehouse

Unbelievableby Yahoo | 2006-11-12 16:14:04 |

The White House was amazing. The intricate works of art and the rooms are just beautiful. The tour of the White House is extremely hard to get into. Fortunately, my Aunt got to take me to go see it. I wouldn't change that experience for the world! I would definitely return if I could! :)

It just didn't live up to expectations. I don't know what else to say, but it wasn't an enjoyable experience. The tours need improvement.

GORGEOUS!by Yahoo | 2005-06-10 19:34:02 |

This house is gorgeous!! It's smaller than you think it would be. It is much more enjoyable if you have a guide with you becuase they can tell you little things that you would never know without them being there! You can also say hi to Connie who has been ther since 1981 in a tarp tent outside the White House 24/7 365 days a year trying to fight for her cause!! Great place for group photos.
